This spring, two students were recipients of Fulbright Student Awards and another received a Harry S. Truman Scholarship. Patrick Fraser’17 and Macy Tran’17 received the Fulbrights, which will take Fraser to Malaysia and Tran to Vietnam as English teaching assistants. Ashley Sorenson’18 received a Truman Scholarship, which provides $30,000 toward graduate school studies in public service fields.

Head Baseball Coach Dave DeGeorge’89 earned his 400th career win (all at Beloit) when the Bucs prevailed over Milwaukee School of Engineering in the second game of a double-header March 18. DeGeorge is the second coach over all Beloit sports to record 400 wins, joining men’s basketball coach Bill Knapton, who has 557.

Beloit will welcome two She-Can Scholars this fall. The Weissberg Program is providing full scholarships for the students from Cambodia and Rwanda through the non-profit She-Can, which exists to equip and empower women from post-conflict countries to become leaders who change their nations.

Beloit was one of a handful of colleges to receive a grant from the National Renewable Energy Lab to use their model for assessing the greatest potential for solar power on campus. A working group of students, faculty, and staff is gathering data via rooftop and ground mount locations and assessing energy consumption and costs.

Kevin Young, Beloit’s 2012-13 Lois and Willard Mackey Professor of Creative Writing, will become the poetry editor of The New Yorker in November. Young is an esteemed poet and scholar who will continue to direct the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. The New Yorker has been publishing Young’s poetry since 1999.
